Furthering the higher education of tomorrow’s leaders so that they can in turn promote peace and improve conditions for people around the world is the raison d’être of the University for Peace (UPEACE). Among recent initiatives: expanding its educational and research programmes around the world, developing coursework on human rights protection and conducting a conference on climate change. The University is proud to have many of its graduates work for the United Nations system.
Headquartered in Costa Rica, the University for Peace was established in December 1980 as a Treaty Organization by mandate of the UN General Assembly. Its primary purpose: promote among all human beings the spirit of understanding, tolerance and peaceful coexistence, stimulate cooperation among peoples and help lessen obstacles and threats to world peace and progress in keeping with the noble aspirations proclaimed in the Charter of the United Nations.
