Protect yourself from mail theft-related check fraud

In recent years, check fraud has become increasingly more relevant in the US. To help keep you protected, we organized a few simple tips to prevent check theft and fraud.

2-minute read

Mail theft-related check fraud occurs when fraudsters steal checks from the U.S. Mail and attempt to negotiate or use these checks for their own benefit. This activity generally combines two crimes, mail theft and check fraud, and can affect personal checks, business checks, government checks, and other payments sent through the mail.

Fraudsters can use stolen checks to their advantage in many ways. Many change the payee's name and/or check amount, fraudulently sign or endorse the check, or use the information from a stolen check to create counterfeit checks. Others sell the check or its account and identifying information through dark web marketplaces or encrypted social media platforms.

Steps you can take

While check fraud is on the rise, there are a few simple steps you can take to keep your money and accounts safe.

Switch to electronic

Instead of making payments by check, use secure electronic payment methods, such as UNFCU’s BillPay services, or set up automatic payments with the merchant or utility company. If you need to send money to friends, family, and other contacts, consider using the transfer options in Digital Banking instead of mailing a check. To send globally, you might consider a wire transfer or mobile money transfer, and within the US, Zelle® is one popular option.

Don’t leave mail unattended

If you must mail a check, take it directly to a U.S. Post Office or hand it to a postal employee rather than leaving it in an unsecured mailbox. This leaves no time for a fraudster to gain access to your unattended check.

Avoid anything that can be altered

When writing a check, use permanent black ink, fill in all fields completely, and avoid leaving blank spaces that could be altered. The New York State Division of Consumer Protection recommends black gel pens, which have ink that is more difficult to erase.

Stay in-the-know

Fraud is easier to spot and prevent when you are up to date on your account activity. It is always best to monitor your UNFCU accounts regularly and review check deposits and transaction details. It is also a good practice to retrieve your incoming mail promptly and ask the postal service to hold your mail when you are away. One helpful tip is to use trusted mail-tracking or delivery-notification services, so you always know where your mail is.

If you suspect check fraud

If a mailed check is missing, altered, or paid to an unknown party, contact UNFCU promptly. Also report suspected mail theft to the U.S. Postal Inspection Service and retain copies of the check, mailing records, account activity, and any related communications. Acting quickly can help limit additional loss and support the investigation.
