Uganda mortgages are available to qualified members who:5

  • Intend to occupy the property being financed (investment properties are not eligible); and 
  • Are not residents of the United States; and 
  • Are UN employees with current professional or field service contracts earning income in an eligible currency; or 
  • Are UN National Professional Officers or General Service staff members in an eligible country earning an eligible income currency, or 
  • Are UN retirees receiving pensions in an eligible currency.

Disclosures

  1. Uganda mortgages cannot be combined with other UNFCU international home loans or Local Staff Loans for the same property. Your approved loan amount could be less than the amount you requested. This may be due to other existing loan obligations you have with UNFCU. Other factors such as credit quality and debt to income ratio may also impact your final loan terms.
  2. For variable rate mortgages, the quoted rate is fixed for the initial period of either 3 or 5 years, as applicable. Thereafter, it will be subject to change annually and may increase. The variable rate is calculated each year by adding the applicable margin to the WSJ Prime rate. The maximum term is 15 years.
  3. Qualified UN staff in Uganda earning Ugandan shillings can secure a variable or fixed rate mortgage for $50,000 to $500,000. A 25% down payment is required. The down payment must be made with available funds in the primary and/or co-borrower’s account(s): borrowed funds are not accepted. All other qualified UNFCU members eligible for Uganda mortgages can secure a variable or fixed rate mortgage for $50,000 to $1,000,000. For these members, a 20–30% down payment is required based on credit quality.
  4. Members approved for a Uganda mortgage can choose to have their monthly payment amounts calculated over 25 years. The term of the mortgage will still be 15 years. This can mean lower monthly payments over the 15-year term, however the remaining mortgage amount will be due at the end of the 15th year. This is called a balloon payment.
  5. Additional eligibility requirements may apply for Uganda mortgages. UN consultants are not eligible for Uganda mortgages.
